Gannett Strikes Exclusive Sports Betting Deal with European Operator

Gannett, the largest newspaper chain in the United States, has announced an agreement with Tipico USA Technology, the American subsidiary of German sports betting provider Tipico Group. The deal will see Tipico become the official sports betting provider of the publisher of USA Today.

The agreement, which has a five-year term and a value of $90 million, names Tipico the exclusive sports betting and iGaming provider for Gannett. The European gaming operator will provide its odds, props, free-to-play games, and betting trends to For The Win, Golfweek, and MMA Junkie, as well as to the rest of the newspaper’s affiliated properties and its entire network.

On the other hand, there will be a hyperlink on Gannett’s pages leading to Tipico’s platform. It will bring the newspaper a referral fee for traffic based on the number of first-time bettors on the operator’s website. Tipico’s $90 million investment will be poured into Gannett’s advertising and sponsored content, such as videos, columns, blog posts, and events.

Michael Reed, Gannett chairman and chief executive office, said that the media’s audience of more than 46 million sports fans is looking forward to the upcoming analysis, betting insights, odds, and unique features which we will become available through the agreement with Tipico.

“Tipico adds incredible expertise from their European operations and next-generation product capabilities, which offer our sports enthusiasts and local consumers a way to become even more invested in the games and sports they care about.”

As part of the deal, Gannett will be able to obtain a minority interest in Tipico by acquiring up to 4,990 common shares in the operator’s US business. This option will be subject to certain conditions being met over the agreement’s five-year term and will also depend on the applicable laws and gaming regulations.

Other highlights include the relaunch of the “Bet For The Win, powered by Tipico Sportsbook” subsection, as well as the start of co-branded digital odds pages throughout the print and digital editions of USA Today Network. Tipico will also co-brand all NFL Wire Team sites

Back in March, Tipico renewed its partnership with Bundesliga’s FC Bayern Munich. The partnership is prolonged till 2025 and will see Tipico create tailored content for sports fans.
