Southampton FC Offers Support for RecoverMe Problem Gambling App
Premier League side Southampton announced today its support for a brand new mobile app aimed at providing discrete support for at-risk gamblers. The RecoverMe app which uses cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat problem gambling would have the Saints’ financial support for further development and growth.
Developed by 3 junior doctors and in consultation with psychiatrists and psychologists, as well as people who struggle with gambling addiction, the RecoverMe app “has been made with problem gamblers for problem gamblers”.
Responsibility to Raise Awareness for Safer Gambling
The team of doctors conducted an acceptability study in 2019, over 60 hours of interviews with ex and current problem gamblers, looking for app features that would need improving and what else they could offer, and based on their findings, they iterated the therapy, design and feature list into the app.

Gambling harm has been a central issue in the UK recently, and Southampton FC outlined that while gambling can be part of the excitement football fans look for during games, the club strongly believes that it is part of its responsibility to raise awareness of the support available for those who need it. The support for the app is the club’s latest step to promote responsible gambling.
Mindfulness Sessions, Emergency Helpline, Self-Help Exercises
The app allows its users to manage addictions by reflecting on gambling habits, challenging thought processes and feelings around gambling, as well as providing access to mindfulness sessions and an emergency helpline and self-help exercises.
