South Australia Launches Inquiry into SkyCity Adelaide

Another land-based casino in Australia, SkyCity, is facing an inquiry into its operations after the body regulating Liquor, Gambling & Lotteries in South Australia announced today it would be commissioning a review of the state’s casino operations.

Probe into SkyCity Adelaide

South Australian Liquor and Gambling Commissioner Dini Soulio noted the inquiries into casino operators in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, as well as the upcoming probe into casinos in Queensland, to justify the need for South Australia to also investigate casino operations as failings point to “broader systemic issues of the casino industry.”

“Inquiries to date have highlighted significant failings on the part of Crown Resorts as operators of Crown Casino. In addition, Star Entertainment Group is the subject of a current inquiry in NSW where significant failings have been identified.”

Soulio then announced that South Australia appointed retired Supreme Court judge Brian Martin QC who has a broad range of expertise to investigate whether SkyCity, the state’s only casino, is suitable to hold a casino license.

“Mr Martin is a highly respected member of the legal profession. He has conducted reviews of key criminal justice policies in South Australia including reforms to the handling of major indictable offenses and the state’s sentencing discount scheme.”
