In a press conference at Fairmont El San Juan Hotel on Tuesday, Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and LionGrove revealed plans to open Foxwoods El San Juan Casino at the legendary Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico.
The Project Will Result in $22M and 360 New Jobs for the Island
On Tuesday, the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and LionGrove announced they are teaming up to revitalise the historic and iconic El San Juan Casino as the Foxwoods El San Juan Casino.
Last week, the Native American tribe from Connecticut announced to the media about today’s press conference at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel set to share the plans related to the reopening of the casino.
The two partners will create a 15,000-square-foot casino at the historic Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in Puerto Rico, which is estimated to bring $22 million and 360 new jobs to the resort strip of Isla Verde. The new project also includes the reopening of the Tropicoro entertainment venue, previously a famous cabaret, which will once again offer a rich programme including performers, artists, live entertainment and events to its guests.
The new gaming venue, located in the beachfront Fairmont El San Juan Hotel, will boast table games and slot machines adding to the resort’s well-appointed luxury accommodations and amenities.
“I am incredibly pleased with the reopening of El San Juan Casino which will result in the creation of hundreds of jobs. The tourism sector represents a great opportunity for our economic development and my commitment is to enhance it.”
Pedro Pierluisi, Governor of Puerto Rico
The island was hit by the Covid-19 crisis like the rest of the world, but Gov. Pierluisi expressed hopes that the vaccines, better treatments and security measures will help the tourism segment on the island take off once again.
Fairmont El San Juan Hotel Undergoes $60M Restoration After Hurricane Maria
The total investment of Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and LionGrove in the resort will amount to $137.5 million, which includes the recently completed renovation for the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel and the new casino ($12.5 million). Out of the 360 new jobs in the region, more than 150 will be offered by the gambling venue.
Andro Nodarse-León, LionGrove Founder and CEO, said that since acquiring El San Juan Hotel in 2015, the hospitality investment firm has been working on this world-renowned venue. In 2017, the company completed the renovation of El San Juan Hotel for the amount of $65 million, which was followed by a $60 million restoration after Hurricane Maria. This led to the rebranding as the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel in January of 2020, Nodarse-León added.
